The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia’s Volunteer Program offers those wishing to develop their skills and pursue an interest in contemporary art the opportunity to provide valuable support to Museum staff.

As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to learn more about the MCA and to be part of a large friendly team.

Volunteer Guides

There are currently no vacancies within the Volunteer Guide team.
The MCA accepts applications on an ongoing basis for future recruitment.

If you are interested in contemporary art, can communicate your enthusiasm to others, and would like to dedicate your time to guiding visitors through the MCA exhibitions, please consider joining us as a Volunteer Guide. Working at the MCA offers opportunities for Guides to further their knowledge of the arts, and to keep abreast of what’s going on in the contemporary art world at local, national, and international levels.

Benefits include access to curator-led tours of some of the most exciting contemporary art exhibitions in the world, artist talks and Sydney art events, comprehensive training, opportunities to develop your own education in the arts, and discounts.

This is a fantastic opportunity for enthusiastic, well-presented and committed individuals to join the MCA as Volunteer Guides. The Volunteers Guides form an integral part of the Museum culture and public face, making them an important part of the success of the Museum as a whole. Successful applicants will take part in a competitive selection process. The responsibilities include:

  • Presentation of accurate, informative and engaging talks on contemporary art exhibitions to MCA visitors
  • Conducting regular guided tours as negotiated and programmed
  • Researching and preparing for guided tours, including regularly attending MCA walkthroughs and public programs
  • Participation in meetings, workshops and training sessions as part of a commitment to professional development.
Successful applicants will have:
  • The ability to relate to a wide range of people
  • The ability to communicate ideas effectively to an interested audience
  • A keen interest in and/or knowledge of contemporary art
  • A desire to contribute to the Museum’s learning environment and success
  • Availability to work weekends, and
Desirable:
  • Previous experience in a Museum or Gallery or Guiding role.

Library Volunteers

There are currently no vacancies within the Library Volunteer team.
The MCA accepts applications on an ongoing basis for future recruitment.

If you are interested in contributing to the MCA Library and creative learning experience at the Museum, please consider joining as a Library Volunteer.
Open to scholars, art students, artists and visitors, the MCA Library provides access to a unique collection of books, catalogues and art journals which reflect the rich exhibition history of the MCA and material related to current exhibitions. This includes contemporary Australian and international artists.
Our library staff offer support in the navigation of this information through reference interviews and search tips.

Orientation sessions and in-depth reference interviews are available to visitors by appointment.

The Library’s rich archives include a large collection of MCA exhibition catalogues stretching back to 1991, as well as over 6,000 files of artist-related ephemera, such as letters, rare catalogues, exhibition notes and exhibition invitations.

Successful applicants will take part in a competitive selection process. The responsibilities include:

  • Indexing contemporary art journals – writing abstracts, assigning subjects
  • General library housekeeping duties, shelving, shelf tidy, administrative tasks
  • Supporting librarian in providing research material to staff/visitors for upcoming exhibitions-includes, • retrieving journals, catalogues and scanning.

Successful applicants will have:

  • The ability to relate to a wide range of people
  • A keen interest in and/or knowledge of contemporary art
  • A desire to contribute to the Museum’s learning environment and success
  • Regular availability
  • Previous experience in a Museum or Gallery
