– Through the Looking Glass
Be drawn into the undercurrent of often overlooked areas of debate in this three-part series facilitated by Namila Benson. In Pushing Buttons, open your ears and eyes to the tales of disability friendly sex worker Rachel Wotton from the documentary Scarlet Road and client Mark Manitta as they explore a triple taboo – sex, disability and prostitution. See the sparks fly as Australian barrister Julian Burnside, hip hop comic Candy Bowers and one half of comedy duo Fear of a Brown Planet Aamer Rahman traverse taboo issues such as boat people, queue jumpers, us, them, xenophobia, repatriation and racism in White Propriety, Dark Society. Step into the world of anthropology to discover if ethnographic objectivity is ever possible, and if morality drives this particular branch of science. Dr Marcia Langton and a guest will discuss these ideas in the context of Brook Andrews’s exhibition TABOO.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
