Mike Parr, born in 1945 in Sydney, largely grew up in Queensland and for some decades has been a Sydney-based artist with a broad-ranging practice, working most notably in performance, printmaking and drawing. His work, often highly political, has been exhibited prolifically around Australia and the rest of the world including in major group exhibitions such as Into Me/Out of Me, PS1, Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2006; Revolutions – Forms That Turn, 16th Biennale of Sydney, Sydney, 2008; 3rd Moscow Biennale, Moscow, 2009; Last Ride in a Hot Air Balloon, 4th Auckland Triennial, Auckland, 2010; and Mix Tape 1980s: Appropriation, Subculture, Critical Style, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 2013.
His work has been subject of many solo exhibitions, including major survey exhibitions such as Volte Face: Mike Parr Prints & Preprints 1970-2005, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, 2006; Mike Parr Edelwiess, Kunsthalle Wein, Vienna, 2012; and Brain Coral, National Art School Gallery, Sydney, 2012. Parr’s work is held in the collection of numerous public institutions and universities throughout Australia, most notably Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; National Library of Australia, Canberra; and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney.
